Transcription: In the spring of 1917, the German army withdrew to the Hindenburg Line. The terrain in the area around Cambrai was ideal for an attack and the British had two innovations that would take the German army almost completely by surprise. Firstly, the assault was not preceded by the usual artillery barrage and secondly tanks were used to spearhead the attack. The results were devastating. However, despite confusion and panic amongst the defenders, tactics were quickly developed and the advance was slowed down.
